IT alive at MDIS extravaganza!

MDIS held its annual open house on 8 March 2014!  Excitement filled the air as we opened our doors to the general public.  Not only were prospective students taken on a walkabout tour of the integrated campus’ many facilities, they were also shown the many sights and sounds of the different schools: from the jumping stilts trainers from the School of Engineering to the free food and drinks offered by the cosplaying students in the School of Hospitality and Tourism.

For STEL, we prepared a series of eye-opening talks on a wide variety of subjects ranging from Computer Network Security to Business Computing and Digital Media.  In another room dedicated to digital media, representatives from Yamaha were on hand to showcase the steps and processes involved in producing an animated short for a film.  Another room was dedicated to Computer Network Security, one of STEL’s latest programmes, where participants learnt about the many ways they can protect themselves from hackers.

Attendees walked away from our Open House booth with an assortment of freebies including plush graduation bears, waterproof bags, themed stationery and more!  All in all, it was a fun-filled day, and we would like to thank everyone who joined us for our Open House!

Facebook to buy virtual reality goggles maker

Facebook Inc will acquire two-year-old Oculus VR Inc, a maker of virtual-reality glasses for gaming, for $2 billion. This is the first-ever hardware deal by the social network. It marks a big bet by Facebook to anticipate the next paradigm shift in an evolving technology industry, at a time when consumers are increasingly opting for smartphones over their PCs.

Facebook said virtual-reality technology could emerge as the next social and communications platform. This means that in future we could be studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face by wearing such goggles from our homes.

A Social Media Minute

A Social Media Minute

Social media is based on real-time interactions. It is also a 24/7 source of communication and activity. This info-graphic shows us the busyness of some of the most popular networks and reminds companies on the importance of responding quickly on social media channels. As there are thousands of tweets and messages sent every minute on Twitter and Facebook, people have come to expect a quick turnaround when they make enquiries or lodge complaints.

It is also important for brands operating online to constantly generate new content to sustain their pool of followers. Since people are on networks so frequently, it is imperative to have new material for them to digest.
